Renewal and Growth

Welcoming a New Season in Your Yoga Practice

As the days grow longer and the air softens, spring invites us into a natural rhythm of renewal. After the stillness of winter, there’s a quiet opportunity to shift—gently, steadily—into movement, curiosity, and growth.

Winter often encourages us to slow down, turn inward, and conserve energy. While that rest is important, it can sometimes leave us feeling a little stagnant, both physically and mentally—especially since the very cold winter lingered a little longer this year here in coastal Virginia. So I feel excited that the warm weather is finally here.

This month, I invite you to begin the process of transforming that lingering stillness into a moving force—one that feels supportive rather than rushed. Think of it less like a sudden push, and more like a gradual unfolding.

A good place to start is simply reconnecting.

Reconnecting with the body.
Reconnecting with the breath.

You might notice areas that feel tight, sleepy, or even unfamiliar. That’s completely natural. Imagine you just woke up from a long sleep—you would probably need a good stretch and some gentle movement to fully feel your body again.

So instead of trying to “fix” anything, approach your practice with curiosity. How does your body want to move today? What happens if you explore a familiar pose in a slightly different way—changing your stance, softening effort, or adding a small pause?

Growth doesn’t always come from doing more. Sometimes, it comes from noticing more.

This month, give yourself permission to explore. Maybe you discover a new sensation in a pose you’ve practiced for years. Maybe your balance shifts. Maybe your breath deepens in a way that feels grounding. These small moments are the seeds of growth.

A Simple Extended Exhalation Breathing Practice

You can return to this anytime you need a reset—morning, evening, or in between moments of your day.

  • Find a comfortable seated or lying position
  • Gently close your eyes or soften your gaze
  • Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4
  • Exhale through your nose or mouth for a count of 6
  • Continue for 1–3 minutes

Let the exhale be just a little longer than the inhale, allowing the body to release and settle. There’s nothing to force—just a quiet invitation to come back to yourself, reconnecting with the body and breath.

Key Takeaways

  • Spring is a natural time to shift from stillness into gentle movement and growth.
  • Small changes in familiar poses can open the door to new awareness and experience.
  • Growth often comes from noticing more, not doing more.
  • Renewal doesn’t have to be dramatic—it can be slow, steady, and deeply nourishing.
